Welcome to the Van Loan Preserve

Seeing is believing when it comes to finding new ideas for home decorating, and there’s a lot to see on a tour of the designer showhouse at t he 1830s Van Loan estate n Bedford, N.H.

Leslie Ritkin of L. Newman Associates / Paul Mansback, Inc., and Heidi Huddleston of Dovetailed Kitchens head a team of local designers who transformed the surrounding landscape and 17 rooms of this stately but welcoming home.  On the following pages, they will take you through the house, room by room, for a close-up look at their designs that range from the swanky Cognac Room to an eco-friendly nursery and a richly hued Colonial music room.

The tour not only offers an abundance of great design ideas, but it will also raise money for the American Cancer Society’s Road to Recovery program, which provides transportation for people fighting cancer to potentially life-saving treatments.

“Sometimes you wonder, ‘Do my donations really help?’  Believe me, they do, and in this case, they will,” said Leslie, who is organizing the benefit three years after surviving Stage 3 breast cancer.

Quietly, the room on the other side of the door-flanked fireplace calls to you.  A vision of beauty in soft, light ocean aqua awaits.  Brimming with sunshine and panoramic views, this inviting room awakens your inner senses and raises your spirit.  Appointed with comfortable rattan furnishings, upholstered in delightful ocean colors and prints, the harmony of the room is crowned with an Asian tea-dyed coral rug.  As you take in the glory of this room, your inner voice will say, “ahhh!”
